My sweet, sweet husband listens to me. He emphasizes with me. What a gem. I have been really, really bothered by our apartment and the fact that we can’t get a house. Can I just talk about that for a minute? Colorado has an insane housing market. It makes me so upset each time I browse for a house. Houses are posted and sold in less than 24 hours! At least anything under $400,000 is anyway. 400k, are you kidding me!? Our family makes a decent living and the fact that we can’t afford a house on a normal 15 or 30 year mortgage sickens me. I continue to browse (dream, rather) houses for sale online, but lately it just hasn’t felt right, you know? Like I am not supposed to be looking for houses for sale in CO. That bothers me too. I don’t know why it doesn’t feel right (I have some ideas), but since I recognized that feeling I have decided to stop and really focus on being content here.
After talking it over with Brett, he has agreed that it a good idea to put some thought into our apartment. Now that we are debt free, we can do a little apartment decorating. Something to make this place feel more like a home for now. I still struggle with the question, is it worth putting money into something that is temporary? Since we are trying to save money for an emergency fund and a down payment, having a cheap apartment helps us save faster. That was the point of the cheap apartment, right? Well, yes. However, a year is a long time to spend living somewhere. If you think about it, we spend a lot of time in this apartment. We like to cook and hang out here so why not put a little extra thought into the place we call home? Brett and I still have to come up with a budget but I have wasted no time making lists and plans on what we want to do with this space. We plan on not going a cent over our said budget because I am treating this as my first reno project. You know, preparation for our future home renovation. Our goal is to have a before and after post of each room with a cost breakdown when we are done. I will also post as we renovate so you people need to hold me accountable!
I can’t decide if I will work on one room at a time or multiple projects at once. Thoughts? Suggestions?
Our apartment is a whopping 706 sq feet so thankfully this isn’t a daunting task. Hopefully soon I will be posting some before pictures of our apartment because all I have is an iPhone and that just won’t do. I am waiting on a special package soon!! Stay tuned 🙂
side note, the term renovate is probably the wrong term because we can’t really renovate a rented space. We can’t paint, knock walls down, replace fixtures, etc. So I guess this is more of a re-decorate/ re-organize project? Whatever.
